Road Trip!!!
School finished for the semester Friday morning.... and since then I've covered roughly 1500 miles! :) Got a lot of ground to cover the next few weeks. My roommate and I traveled from TX to Arkansas the first night. 2nd day was AR to just south of Chattanooga, TN in Georgia. Yesterday, I drove from GA to west of Knoxville for church, then east and south to Kings Mountain, NC. Today you would have found me traveling from south NC to north VA. Whew.... what a few last days.... good times always.
somewhere in Virginia |
Saw a burning truck on the side of the road, that scared me when I was driving past, because something popped underneath the axle and we could feel the heat in our car. Saw much of AR, TN, NC and VA. Pretty country, I can imagine its much prettier in the spring and summer. Right now its pretty brown and bare, but still pretty. And best of all, saw many friends! and met new people! Some I hadn't see in 4 years, some more recently, but its always good to see friends.

I am constantly reminded how good God is! What a God He is, One I can completely trust in and know that no matter what happens or where I am, He takes amazing care of me! I hope you don't forget either how good He is and remember to thank Him for it. He honors those who honor Him.

Snow in Texas!
It Snowed here in Texas yesterday morning!!!! I had left the window open the night before, so when I woke up, it was pretty cold in my house. Then I got up and looked out the window...... I couldn't believe there was actually snow on the ground. I was super excited, I yelled for my roommate and we both went outside for a few minutes. Course it was good by noon, but hey, it still snowed here!!!!
Yes, I do miss the snow back home in Alaska.

Thankful for....
I know Thanksgiving was last week, but as a Christian and an American, I don't think I should retain my thankfulness to just one day a year. God loves thankfulness in us. And as I heard preached recently, thankfulness is not just being thankful in the heart, it is actually the expression of gratefulness. So, I want to express how thankful I am for....
1. my Saviour, Jesus Christ, who is my Redeemer, Friend, Father, Teacher and so much more! He is ever faithful to me and continues to grow me each day. I love you God!
2. my parents - who taught me so much... thank you especially for teaching me to be a hardworker
3. my brothers and sisters - thru the good times, the bad, the crazy and the hilarious
Wouldn't trade you guys for anyone
4. my church, Bible Baptist Church of Fairbanks, AK. amazing
5. being an American - living in the land of the free, because of the brave
6. being an Alaskan - enough said
7. friends all around the world! I love staying with you and enjoying your company
8. close friends, who challenge, encourage and reprove me when needed
9. a car so I can travel (its even one of my favorite colors) :)
10. preachers - who are unashamed of the Gospel and of speaking the truth
11. The Word of God - alive, convicting, comforting
12. Tanna - a good friend, who keeps me updated with the news back home and sends me pictures ;)
shout out to Tanna and my sister, Tolovana! :) |

Remember the Alamo!!
This past week for Thanksgiving, I went down to Austin, TX to visit with some friends for the long weekend. I had a great time and it was a nice break from classes. Thanksgiving Day was gorgeous! about 70 degrees and sunny. It was kinda weird, since we normally go sledding that day back home. But I enjoyed the sunshine. :)
On Friday, my friend and I went down to San Antonio. Walked around the riverwalk, watched a short IMAX video about the Alamo, went to the actual Alamo and did some Christmas shopping. We had a marvelous time!!
I love history, so seeing the Alamo was pretty cool. Its pretty amazing that all those men decided to fight to the death for freedom. They didn't know that their death would inspire many others to stand and fight and eventually Texas would send Mexico packing. By dying, they helped pave the way so others could live in freedom. You know our lives are to be lived for Christ, but we should be willing to live or even die for Christ's glory. I think of people like William Borden who died shortly after arriving on the mission field. He didn't get much of a chance do much there on the foreign field before God called him home. On the human level, we would say 'what a waste.' But in God's eyes, nothing is a waste if it is done for His glory! Because of Borden's death, many others in America were inspired to give their lives for the service of their Saviour. God was honored even in William Borden's death. Are you honoring Christ now with your life?
John 15:13 "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."

Quick trip North
This past week I flew to Chicago to meet my youngest brother for about 6 days. We had a great time. We got in around midnight Monday night and after eating at IHOP (yum!), we got on the road. Except for an hour break, we drove the rest of the night to Gaylord, Michigan, arriving about 930am on Tuesday. We stayed there for a couple days, visiting Grace Baptist College, where my brother is considering attending next year. I thought it was pretty up there, maybe cause I've been in Texas so long and anything after here is pretty. :) ok, ok, I know some people love Texas, but I must say its not on my favorites list.
Gaylord, MI |
From there we drove south, going to a our first college football game. It was exciting, but very, very cold! So, we didn't stat for the whole game. But the next day, we made it into South Bend, Indiana! That was one of the highlights of the trip, since we were going to two UAF vs. Notre Dame hockey games! yay! I haven't been to a game since February of this year, so I was excited. They were good games, but alas, we didn't win either one. Though it was close! They had a nice arena there, very new and the people were extra friendly.
Saturday night we again spent on the road, since we flew out of Chicago Sunday morning. So, for 6 days we spent 2 nights driving/sleeping in the car, 3 nights in a hotel (2 different ones) and 1 night at a friends house. And we traveled almost 1000 miles in those 6 days. Crazy, but fun!!! :D

mini BBC-Alaskan renunion
This past weekend, some of the girls from BBTI went down with me to Austin, TX for a short vacation. We had Thursday afternoon and Friday off school, so good time for a road trip. Except for the crazy first day of travel which I wrote about in my previous post. We went down for a couple nights of a missions conference, which were great. While there, I got to see an old friend from Alaska, Roxanne. Also, there was a missionary couple there that used to attend my church in Alaska back in the 90s. So, we got to reunite and spend a little time with each other. Also, the family we stayed with for the weekend, are from Alaska originally. Just can't get away from it. :) Have I mentioned that I LOVE Alaska!!!

Just Another Day!
Well, those of you who know me know that sometimes my life gets a little crazy. Even when I don't try to be, things just happen to me. :) This week the school gave us half of Thursday and all of Friday off from classes. There is a missions conference in Austin, TX (about 4-5 hours south of us) and they wanted us to be able to go if we so desired. So, us 4 single girls decided to go, along with Tim our Phonetics teacher and his wife Cara. Two of the girls rode with Tim & Cara and my roommate Nicole and I followed them in my car. After morning class we headed out on the road. I had to stop and fill my tires at the gas station, so I did that while Tim stopped to get some food. I filled my tires and started to go meet the others, when I realized I filled my tires, but I forgot to get gas. Ugh, two U-turns later, I was back at the gas station. Now I was in hurry, cause Tim wanted to get there in plenty of time before the service started. Pulled up to the pump, threw open my car door and hopped out.... SPLASH!! My left foot was completely submerged in a large, deep puddle. sigh. Ok, fill the car and lets go.... nope. Sometime I had never done before.... I had pulled into the pump on the wrong side. So, get back into the car and turn it around, so I can fill it up. Finally accomplished my goal, now to meet Tim and we're back on the road.
About an hour down the road, everything is grand. Slightly rainy, but beautiful skies (notice I didn't say scenery, I'm still not sure about this state). :) I noticed this mini-van entering the freeway behind me two lanes to my right. No big deal, but I felt uneasy about it. They changed lanes and were now right next to me. Sure enough, a minute later, she was trying to change lanes into MY lane! Praise the Lord there was no one in the lane on my left side and I swerved over. She noticed and it scared us both immensely! Later she pulled up next to me and apologized. I think she was more shaken than I was.
Thankfully, we had no other incidents on the way down, except for a little bumper to bumper traffic once we hit Austin. But we made it to church in plenty of time. Thats enough for one day, right?
wrong again.
That night after the church service, we were headed to the place were three of us are staying for the weekend. Its dark and I had looked it up online, but forgot to write the directions down, so I asked my friend. We've got a map and away we go..... it was a 45 minute drive from the church and only took us about an hour and 10 minutes. :) yep, we got "lost." It wasn't totally lost, because I knew how to get back to where we started. After several phone calls and text msgs, we arrived at our destination. Thank You, Lord!!
Even though it was an interesting day and at some moments frustrating, I must say - GOD IS GOOD!!!
It was SO refreshing to be at the conference last night. It was almost like being back home in my own church. And I even had friends there from my church back home. The singing was amazing and the preaching excellent. Let me tell you, My LORD is a truly Amazing God! He is with me through everything I go thru. And He is so patient with me day after day. There is no God like my God. Do you know Him?

In Christ ALONE
Powerful words! Read and think about the words...
In Christ alone my hope is found,He is my light, my strength, my song;
this Cornerstone, this solid Ground,
firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace,
when fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
My Comforter, my All in All,
here in the love of Christ I stand.
In Christ alone! who took on flesh
Fulness of God in helpless babe!
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones he came to save:
Till on that cross as Jesus died,
The wrath of God was satisfied -
For every sin on Him was laid;
Here in the death of Christ I live.
There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain:
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave he rose again!
And as He stands in victory
Sin's curse has lost its grip on me,
For I am His and He is mine -
Bought with the precious blood of Christ.
No guilt in life, no fear in death,
This is the power of Christ in me;
From life's first cry to final breath.
Jesus commands my destiny.
No power of hell, no scheme of man,
Can ever pluck me from His hand;
Till He returns or calls me home,
Here in the power of Christ I'll stand.

Alaska Pictures
Maybe its the heat, but this trip/move has been a little harder for me. I have missed Alaska this time more than other trips. Maybe its because when I'm in a foreign country, everything is SO different and I am so busy I don't have time to think about home as much. Here I am still in the United States, but small town Texas is a far cry from the Interior of Alaska! same, yet different. Anyway, a couple weeks ago, I was really missing the mountains and the rugged beauty of my home state. So, I remembered a good friend of mine loves photography and has tons of amazing pictures! So I emailed her and soon I had two picked out and they were on their way... :) They are gorgeous and help with my homesickness. My roommate even loved them, so they are both on our living/diningroom walls. Here's the pictures of the pictures. :D

BBQ!
My family loves the BBQ! we grill burgers, steaks, chicken, salmon, whatever! I have missed the grill the past two months, so I decided to spend a little of my PFD and buy a small grill. I'm so glad I did! :) I've already done bbq chicken and corn on the cob and today plan on grillin so big, fat, juicy burgers! Sometimes its the small things that matter. And by the way, charcoal is the only way to go.... no gas grills for me.

God's Daughter
God is good. It never ceases to amaze me how He continues to work in my life. Through thick and thin, He is there. He guides and leads when I have good days and even when I have 'bad' days. It is so easy for me to get wrapped up in my own little world and get focused on myself and my needs. But He always reminds me that there is a greater purpose for my life. That purpose is to glorify Him!
This week, I have been meditating on the thought that I am God's daughter and what that really means. (thanks, N) First of all, of course, God loves me! such a simple, yet profound thought! That the God of the world, the Creator of the universe, the all-powerful Lord loves sinful, little me! May I never get over that! Not only does God love me, but He provides for me. He says that He will supply my every need and He always does! I am His daughter! He is my Father, my Dad, my Daddy. He hurts when I hurt. He comforts me during that hurt. He protects and strengthens me. Its so easy to forget all that. This week has been a good reminder. I challenge you to think this week, what is God to you? What are you in Christ?

Stormy Night
I have this crazy friend who it seems almost every time I am around him, I do something dangerous. Not on purpose, it just happens! :) Yesterday, I drove down to Ft. Worth/Dallas for church. Sunday morning I was in Irving to go to church where a missionary family to Mexico was visiting. I wanted to meet them face to face. It was good to finally see them. I spent the afternoon in Dallas at a mall; did a little bit of shopping and then watched my home church's service online. (yay for livestream!)
That evening, I headed over to north Dallas to see my wonderful friends the Cofers. They were at one of their supporting churches and I always love to go see them.... even though dangerous things happen! The service was wonderful; Mickey preached an excellent sermon about missions. We hung around a bit after church talking and then migrated to the door to leave.... this is where it gets good.... :) I had overheard someone say it was raining. Cool. I like rain. and then I opened the door to outside. Uh, that wasn't rain, it was a flood! it was raining buckets of water, the wind was whipping around, lightning was flashing, thunder roaring and water was running across the parking lot. Jaaz and I ran across the parking lot to my car. By the time we got in, we were literally soaked to the bone. I pulled up behind Mickey. We were going to a church member's house for supper. There was four cars following each other. Which I hate following people after dark. I was the last in the line and Mickey was in front of me. Off we go....
The two boys were with me, all cold and soaked. There was a tree down across one of the lanes at one point, which I had to swerve to miss. Mind you, its dark, except for the flashes of lightning, some of the streetlights were going on and off, the rain was hitting my car so hard I thought it was going to dent my car, my windshield wipers were going as fast as they could and I was still having a hard time seeing out the window. And I was scared of hydroplaning. And then Mickey's van stalls out twice, so we get farther and farther behind the lead vehicles. Now we don't really know where we are going. I call Trina.... Mickey answered. He had the phone, not Trina. Well that does us no good. Thankfully the guy who's house we were going to called Jonah's phone. yay, we're going to get directions! Ok, off we go again... I'm following Mickey.... left hand turn... oh no! we didn't turn far enough and we are in the turn lane for the oncoming traffic and there is a median between us and the lane we need to be in. Cars are coming... quick turn into a parking lot across oncoming traffic! Turned around again and 2nd try.... ok, made it into the right lane. yay! Made it safely to the people's house, dash out of the car and run up the sidewalk to the door... yep soaked again. whew. At least we had hot soup to meet us there.
By this time it was late and I didn't know where all the storm was or how long it would last. So ended up staying with the Cofers in their hotel room. One of these days, I am going to learn to keep an overnight bag in my car for emergencies. This morning, got up at 545 to drive back to school in time for classes. yep, I was a bit tired today. :)
Even though it was a scary drive last night following Mickey, I'm glad I went. I love the Cofer family. They have truly become like family to me. Love them!

Lightning!
"The voice of thy thunder was in the heaven: the lightnings lightened the world: the earth trembled and shook." (Psalm 77:18)
"His lightnings enlightened the world: the earth saw, and trembled." (Psalm 97:4)
I have always loved thunder and lightning. In Alaska, I don't get to see it all that much, not where I live in the Interior. So, when it begins to shower lightning from the sky, I always try to watch. Seeing the magnificent light display in the sky reminds every time of my Lord. He is the One who makes the lightning. To me, it is a symbol of His great power.
This evening, I was outside talking with a friend on the phone, when I noticed the night sky was being lit up every 5-10 seconds. I continued to watch for quite some time. It was far enough away that I couldn't hear any thunder, just saw the lightning.
After a while, my roommate and I decided to go for a little drive. We drove to the other side of town and parked in a large, empty parking lot and sat on my car just watching the sky continue to shine. It was amazing!! The dark, black, cloudy sky would become brilliantly light with just a streak of lightning. Impressive!! I think we sat outside for about an hour just watching God at work.
"And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.
His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:" (Matthew 28:2,3)
Finally we came home and eventually went to bed.... only to get back up later because the storm had moved directly over us. We got up and watched through our livingroom window at more of God's awesome display in the sky. We stayed up till past 1am (I'm still up) watching the amazing lightning. I love lightning!
and now I love it even more since I read this verse.
"For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be." (Matthew 24:27)
Just think one day when Jesus comes in the clouds to take us blood bought believers home to heaven, it will be like the lightning, the entire sky will be lit up! Everyone will know He came for us. I can't wait!!!

The Need is Still Great
I was recently sent this poem written by a single missionary. She was at my church back home and though I wasn't there to meet her, her poem was a blessing to me and I hope it will be to you as well.
The Call
You sat there, in the service.
The message broke your heart.
And deep within, you felt a glow,
A fire, begin to start.
You went up to the altar.
And tears were in your eyes
As you gave your life to do your part
To answer their pleading cries.
And for a time, that vision
Of a dark and dying world
Spurred you on to action
With you banner clear, unfurled.
And then—
The vision slowly faded
To a lifeless painting, gray
And not so nice to look at
Every passing day
The cry of souls grew dimmer.
And your heart no longer broke,
For that pledge you made was hindered
As you stayed still when God spoke.
And yet,
God is still there, calling,
Asking, “Who will go?”
Now, friend, will you answer
To that call, heard long ago?
Or will you wait until the flames
That burn within your soul
Die down again? Will you look away
And lose sight of your goal?
Take heart, dear Christian, follow Him
And let your blaze burn bright,
To see the need around you
In this blackest time of night.
And so—
Now you sit here, reading.
Again, you hear that call.
Again, you hear the Spirit beg
For you to give your all.
A choice is set before you.
Will you stay, or go?
“Has He called me?” you question.
Ask Him. You will know.

still hot!
Its still HOT every day! Each day gets over 100 degrees, which is hard for this Alaskan to endure. I have survived so far, but some days I really feel worn out and exhausted from battling the heat. They tell me it doesn't last forever. One lady told me the other day at church, that they even seen 20 degree weather in the winter. That sounds wonderful! :)
Classes are moving forward. We are learning a lot of new things in Phonetics. Some are easy for me and some not so easy. I have a hard time with learning different tones and saying them. The actual sounds are easier for me to produce. Hopefully with more practice, I'll get the hang of it.
Culture class has been informative. One can not stress enough that a missionary needs to know much of the culture before 'forcing' new beliefs on the people. We read one story about a tribe in South America..... after a man's wife had a baby, he would lounge in his hammock for several days. The missionary kept pestering him, telling him he was lazy and needed to get to work. All the man would explain was that his wife had just a baby so he was staying in the hammock. He would lay there all day. After several days of the missionary bothering him about it, the man got up and went back to work. Later that week, the missionary heard that the mother of the new baby had killed her child. Appalled, he asked the villagers why she did so. It was a custom of their culture for the husband/father of the child to remain in his hammock for x amount of days after his wife had the baby - this signified it was his child. By getting up before the number of days was fulfilled, he was telling everyone it was not his child, though it really was. Rather than live with the shame of an illegitimate child, the mother killed the baby. This missionary did not try to learn the culture before trying to 'correct' it. Remember you may have the Truth of the Gospel, but they have a culture and way of life... you may be doing more harm than good, by simply coming in and sharing your culture/beliefs before first studying theirs.
For those of you who are curious about my living arrangements, here are a few pictures. I live on the right side of the duplex with another girl, Nicole. We have a nice little 3 bedroom place. We get along really well, which is a blessing, since we'll be living together for the next 9 months. :)

1st Day of Class and .....Spiders!!!
Monday morning we began our year at BBTI (Baptist Bible Translators Institute) with World Survey Class. Only half an hour long, this is where the students prepare and share with the class different missionaries that have trained at BBTI and now are on the mission field, different countries of the world and their needs and a different people group each morning. It is just a quick synopsis of each item, but it gives us a deeper look into our task of spreading the Gospel to ALL the world. It is sad how many people groups around the world have yet to have a Gospel witness among their people.
The major foundation class we commenced on Monday was Phonetics. What is phonetics you ask and how does it apply to World Missions? Well it is the study of every human sound that is used in any language around world. The goal is hear the sound, know how to reproduce it and do so in such a manner without an accent. Some people mistakenly believe that one has to grow up making a certain sound in order to make it and that if you try to learn it as a much older person, you'll never accurately produce that sound. However!, every human is built with the same exact "equipment," that is, everyone has the same type of speech tract (structure of oral, nasal cavities, etc.) So, one can learn how to produce any sound that another human being can make, it just make take a little more training and practice than other sounds. Now, how does this apply to Missions? One needs to know another person's language to effectively share the Gospel with them. Simply using a trade language or teaching them English will not cut it.
Anyways, Phonetics class has been very interesting, thought-provoking and challenging. But I see the need for it and will continue to strive to master phonetics. Actually I am enjoying it, but it will get harder, I know. :)
Also, we have a Culture class currently during the 2nd part of morning. Basically, a class to teach different cultures, how to adapt to them, use it in a way to share the Truth of the Gospel without being offense to their culture, how to deal with culture shock, etc. Too many missionaries in year's past went to different countries and in the process of evangelizing the people of that country, also tried to Americanize them. In order to effectively communicate the Gospel and convert others, one must first understand their culture and lifestyle. So far, everything taught, I have been convinced of already, but have been given many good examples of why knowing a culture is crucial to the spreading of the Gospel.
Ok, now for the spiders.... I'm sure some of you are wondering how they tie in. Well, I'm from Alaska.... which means our spiders are the size of a dime or smaller. Good size if you ask me. Well, for our first day of work detail, Mary and I were assigned to clean all the outdoors kids playground equipment. We wanted to be sure it was safe for all the little kids to play on, basically no spiders. First off, we go to the washhouse to get a bucket of water, big spider in the drainhole of the sink. Maybe the size of a quarter, ok no biggie, we killed that one. Moving on.... we clean a few pieces and then! Mary discovers a large black widow spider with a large egg sack. Uh, yeah those are the really poisonous ones. Great! Scary, but we dispose of the mama and all her little babies yet to be born. No that is not cruel and unusual punishment! :) We cleaned the rest of the equipment killing a couple other nonharmless spiders. Whew, yes we are done!
That night I am on the porch talking to my sister on the phone (not good cell reception inside my house). I set the phone down for a couple minutes, when I come back and go to pick up the phone.... aghhh!! LARGE spider less than 5 inches from my phone!!! Like large in that its body was the size of my thumb, not counting its legs! Maybe that's not large to some of you, but remember I'm from Alaska. Sscccarrry! shudder.
So, if you think of me.... pray that I'll survive the intense phonetics class and all the huge, crazy, dangerous, scary spiders!!! :D

Native Alaskan meets HOT Texas!
Between the time I purchased my car in Denver, CO and arrived here at school in Bowie, TX, I logged almost 3000 miles on that car! Many long hours of driving, many states covered, but well worth it to see many friends and family that I hadn't seen in a long time. From Denver, I drove north to Ft. Collins area to see a friend from my days at West Coast Baptist College. Then on thru eastern Wyoming to arrive in Rapid City to see some friends I hadn't seen in 7 years! The Holders have always been a blessing and encouragement to me and still are today! I spent much time with 2 of their girls and got to see half of the family there. Also saw some dear friends in Rapid, that once lived in Alaska.
From there, I traveled across the state to Huron, SD - my dad's hometown. Stayed the night with my grandma on the old farm and left early the next morning. Stopped in Omaha and had lunch with my brother Luke and his wife, Sarah. Haven't seen them in 4 years. Continued driving all day until I reached Peoria, IL about 9pm that night. That was a long day! but I stayed with missionary friends, the Leutholds and Lithuanian friend. Had a wonderful 2 days with them, except I had this horrible kink in my neck. I've never had something like that before, thankfully I was able to get it taken care of before getting back on the road.
From Peoria, I drove another long day to Stratford, OK, where I stayed with another family. I got in later than I expected, but they were all up waiting for me. I enjoyed my time with them as well..... except the next day after leaving, I got an email from them.... seems one of the girls had lice (picked up from Vacation Bible School probably).... no big deal, except I slept in her bed the night I was with them! argh!!! :) but so far, no little bugs for me! Thank you, God!
I arrived in Bowie, TX Wednesday evening. I was tired.... and hot.... but I am getting settled in here. The last few days have been over 100 degrees. Its been a trial for me, but hopefully it gets cooler soon!!!

Pics from my Trip in the Lower 48
First of all, for those of you not from Alaska, "The Lower 48" is what we call the continental United States. Or I may even refer to them as "The States." You'd understand if you were from Alaska. :)
Just thought I would share some pictures with you today, since I didn't have them when I posted last.
